Heritage blacksmiths in Ontario
When a strap hinge, a thumb latch or a forged bracket goes missing from an early Ontario building, there is no catalogue to order from. The replacement has to be forged, and the number of smiths in this province doing architectural work to a heritage standard is very small.
A heritage blacksmith forges replacement hardware and ironwork to match a surviving original: strap and H hinges, thumb latches and pintles, shutter dogs, door and gate furniture, brackets, hooks and fire tools, along with repairs to wrought ironwork that a welding shop would ruin. The method is the point. Hand-forged work carries hammer marks, slight asymmetry and a texture that cast or machined reproductions do not have, and on an early building that difference is visible at arm's length. Bring the smith an original to copy wherever one survives, even a badly corroded one, since the dimensions and the profile are what matter. Two verified smiths is a thin field and both are worth a wait.
What to ask before you hire
- Can you work from an original, and do you need it in hand? A surviving example, even corroded, is the best specification available.
- Is the work hand-forged throughout? Fabricated and cast substitutes read as modern immediately on an early building.
- What finish do you recommend for outdoor use? Traditional finishes need maintenance, and it is better to know the cycle in advance.
Forged hardware and ironwork is eligible under municipal programs as part of the conservation work it belongs to. Because these are small-value items, they are usually bundled into a larger door, window or fence scope rather than applied for alone.
