Stained glass restoration in Toronto and the GTA

Lead came has a working life of roughly a century. When a stained glass window starts to bow, rattle or drop cement, it is telling you the lead matrix has gone soft, and the fix is a full re-lead in a studio rather than putty and hope at the sill.

Toronto and the surrounding region hold most of Ontario's remaining stained glass studios, and most of their work is ecclesiastical: re-leading bowed windows, conserving kiln-fired painted and stained panels where the paint layer is lifting, replacing failed cement, and re-setting panels with proper support bars. The other half of the job is protective glazing, an exterior secondary glazing system that shields the panel from hail and vandalism. Done wrong, unventilated protective glazing traps condensation against the lead and accelerates exactly the decay it was installed to prevent. Ventilated systems are the standard, and it is worth asking specifically.

What to ask before you hire

  1. Will the panel be re-leaded in the studio, and will you document the layout first? A rubbing or measured photograph before disassembly is standard practice.
  2. If you are proposing protective glazing, is it ventilated? Sealed exterior glazing over a leaded window traps moisture and damages the panel it was meant to protect.
  3. How will you treat painted or fired glass? Painted detail can be washed off by the wrong cleaning method, and it cannot be repainted authentically.
Grant funding

Church and institutional buildings are eligible under most GTA programs, and Toronto's has no cap on non-residential designated property. Faith buildings should also look at provincial and denominational funds alongside the municipal grant.
