Heritage metalwork and ironwork in Ontario
Wrought iron and cast iron are different materials with different failure modes and different repairs, and most fabricators treat both as generic steel. Welding cast iron the way you would weld steel cracks it. Getting a Victorian fence or a roof cresting repaired starts with a shop that names the material correctly.
Heritage metalwork on Ontario buildings is mostly fencing and gates, stair and balcony railings, roof cresting and finials, window guards and boot scrapers. Wrought iron is fibrous and can be forge welded and drawn out. Cast iron is brittle, and broken sections are repaired by pinning, brazing, or casting a replacement from a mould taken off a surviving unit. Two failure modes belong in every quote: galvanic corrosion where dissimilar metals meet, and iron embedded in masonry, where rust expands and splits the stone from inside. The paint system matters as much as the metal, because preparation and primer are what buy the next thirty years.
What to ask before you hire
- Is this wrought or cast iron, and how does that change the repair? A shop that does not distinguish will crack the casting.
- Can you cast a replacement from a surviving section? For missing cast ornament this is the only faithful route.
- What is the paint specification? Surface preparation and primer decide lifespan far more than the topcoat.
Original fences, railings and architectural metalwork are eligible under most municipal programs, and street-facing ironwork is usually an easy case with a heritage committee because the result is publicly visible.
