Heritage metalwork and ironwork in Toronto and the GTA
Wrought iron and cast iron are different materials that fail in different ways and are repaired by different methods, and most fabricators treat both as generic steel. Getting a Victorian fence or a roof cresting repaired properly starts with a shop that can tell you which one you have.
The heritage metalwork on GTA buildings is mostly fencing and gates, stair and balcony railings, roof cresting and finials, boot scrapers and window guards. Wrought iron is fibrous and forgiving and can be forge welded and drawn out. Cast iron is brittle, cannot simply be welded like steel, and broken sections are usually repaired by pinning, brazing or casting a replacement from a mould taken off a surviving unit. Two failure modes belong in any quote: galvanic corrosion where dissimilar metals meet, and iron embedded in masonry, where rusting iron expands and splits the stone around it. The paint system matters as much as the metalwork, because preparation and primer buy the next thirty years.
What to ask before you hire
- Is this wrought or cast iron, and how does that change the repair? A shop that does not distinguish will weld cast iron and crack it.
- Can you cast a replacement from a surviving section? For missing cast ornament this is the only faithful route.
- What paint system are you specifying? Surface preparation and primer decide the lifespan far more than the topcoat colour does.
Fences, railings and architectural metalwork are eligible under most GTA programs when they are original features. Toronto funds 50% to $10,000 residential, and Markham, Oakville and Caledon all treat streetfront ironwork as visible conservation work.
