Heritage painting and plaster in Peterborough and Northumberland

Every painted surface on a pre-1960 Ontario building should be assumed to contain lead until tested. That single fact separates heritage painting from ordinary painting, because the preparation method, the containment and the disposal are all different, and dry-sanding a lead-painted exterior contaminates the soil around the house.

The work in this region covers exterior repainting of clapboard and trim, interior plaster repair and finishing, and occasionally decorative work such as graining, stencilling and historic colour matching. On plaster, the heritage question is always whether a wall or ceiling can be re-keyed and patched in a compatible lime-based mix rather than stripped to the studs and drywalled. On paint, the questions are lead-safe preparation, whether a breathable coating is appropriate over lime plaster or soft brick, and whether anyone has looked at the original colour before choosing a new one. Paint stratigraphy, taking a scraped sample down through the layers, is inexpensive and settles the colour argument permanently.

What to ask before you hire

  1. How will you test for and handle lead paint? Containment, wet methods and proper disposal should be described without you having to prompt.
  2. Is the coating breathable, and does it need to be? A vapour-tight paint over lime plaster or soft brick traps moisture in the wall.
  3. Can the plaster be re-keyed and patched instead of replaced? Ask before anyone prices a tear-out, and ask what mix they would patch with.
Grant funding

Painting alone is often excluded from municipal heritage grants as maintenance, but it is frequently eligible as part of a larger conservation project. Peterborough, Port Hope and Prince Edward County all run programs worth checking against your scope.
